Lonny Magazine

Tomorrow is the exciting launch of Lonny Magazine, an online publication that will appeal to design aficionados and eco-minded style spotters alike. The brainchild of two tastemakers, Michelle Adams and her partner Patrick Cline, Lonny is sure to become a go-to site for inspiration. Michelle Adams has long captured my attention as the creator of an eco-friendly textile and bedding company called Rubie Green. Garnering her design chops as a former Domino magazine editor, her newest project will continue to focus on showcasing accessible design with flair. The online format appeals to my eco-sensibility for saving trees, but also the instant gratification of clickable links on each live page. The inaugural issue will feature the likes of former Domino greats, Deborah Needleman and Kate Townsend Simpson, in addition to featuring entertaining tips from one of my favorite upcycling pros, Eddie Ross. If the previews of Patrick Clines photography are an indication of what is in store, Lonny will capture an in-depth peak into enviably stylish lifestyles. Can’t wait!

Eco Alternative: Best Beauty Serum

Over the past year, I've been trying to trade in my old beauty products for more natural eco-alternatives. One of the hardest to replace was my beloved Beauty Booster Serum from Trish McEvoy. I searched long and hard to find an organic and natural alternative that I feel does the job just as well-- and I have.

Serumdipity from Marie-Veronique Organics is my new favorite product. I use it as a moisturizer because it is hydrating, brightening and plumping all in one. It can also be pressed into the skin after you've put makeup on to diminish a powdery look and make everything look flawless and fresh. Marie-Veronique Organics is a line of beautiful and natural products that are effective without using harsh chemicals. And with ingredients like green tea, honeysuckle and elderberry the product smells as good as it performs. To make sure I wasn't biased, I recently had a friend give it a try and she loved it too! For a shopping guide to their extensive line, check out Marie-Veronique Organics here.

Fun Friday!

Thank you to the Chic Coles for giving me the Honest Scrap Blog Award!

Here are the rules I must follow, upon receiving this award:

  • Say thanks and give a link to the presenter of the award.
  • Share "10 Honest Things" about myself.
  • Present this award to 7 others whose blogs I find brilliant in content and/or design, or those who have encouraged me.
  • Tell those 7 people they've been awarded HONEST SCRAP and inform them of these guidelines in receiving.

In the spirit of fun Fridays, here are some honest things about me:
1) I am a lefty—so is my Mom, sister and husband. Look out when eating dinner with us if you are right handed!
2) Learning to ski is at the top of my list, but as we discovered last year, I’m terrified of ski lifts….
3) I studied abroad in Florence, Italy as an undergrad and am still under the spell of La Dolce Vita. (My parents are in Italy right now and I’m so jealous!) If I could get away with riding a vespa or driving a jolly fiat in Charlotte I would, until then I watch Everyday Italian and drink prosecco as much as possible.
4) My sister is my hero. 5) Besides yoga, Zumba is becoming one of my favorite activities!
6) Some of my happiest memories are SCUBA diving. (Also some of my scariest)
7) I fell in love with a Great Dane puppy last week and can’t stop thinking about her.
8) Every time I go shopping, I end up with a white tee-shirt.
9) I LOVE coconut desserts: coconut cake, almond joy, coconut macaroons are the best
10) There are plenty of times that I get to the store and realize that I forgot my reusable bags, but I like to think that working to take small green steps each week all add up

I would like to present the Honest Scrap Award to anyone who would like to play along! Thanks again, Chic Coles, have a wonderful weekend!!

PlantLove by CARGO cosmetics

The perfect pout just became synonymous with going green thanks to the lipstick line from CARGO called PlantLove. Housed in tubes made of corn; these beauties are compostable and green-house-gas neutral. Hollywood beauty mavens such as Denise Richards and Angie Harmon have created personal shades for the collection; available at Sephora, they’ve created a gorgeous green choice for those with a sweet tooth for cosmetics.

Most recently, one of my favorite fashionistas, Whitney Port, is adding her panache to the project. Whitney's signature color, Eve Pinky, has debuted. Yet another reason to love PlantLove.

Green Move 12: Soy Candles

A perfect candle will have the following qualities:
1) Look Good
2) Smell Great
3) Be made out of soy wax or other all-natural waxes

The first two reasons are self explanatory, but why natural wax? Besides being a more eco-friendly alternative to paraffin based wax [read: made from petroleum], soy wax and other natural wax candles have a number of superlative qualities.
  • Made of sustainable materials
  • 50% longer burn life than paraffin candles
  • Soy wax can be cleaned from furniture and textiles with soapy water; paraffin wax is very difficult to remove
  • Produce 90% less soot and don't release toxins which means cleaner air in your home
  • Soy has a lower melting point which means your candle burns at lower temperatures and you have faster scent dispersion
Choosing natural wax candles is an easy green choice and it is easier than ever before.
Here are my top three favorite eco-candle picks:
Linneas Lights Candles from Inglenook Decor have french chic inspired packaging and got a rave review from Everything LEB on their scent too. For a limited time you can receive free shipping, here.
DayNa Decker Candles have been a favorite of mine for a while now. They are sleek and modern looking, come in a number of beguiling scents and are available on line from Organica Deluxe.

The Blushing Hostess recently introduced me to Low Country Luxe and I am completely smitten. My recent visit to Charleston has me pining for a few candles from their southern inspired scents. Beyond their eco-chic packaging this company has a strong commitment to philanthropy and donates proceeds to a number of prominent charities.

A Modern Green Home in upstate NY

Nestled in the hills of upstate NY is James Lerner's modern weekend getaway that boasts a dramatic design and strong attention to energy-efficiency.
The angular exterior of the home provides sweeping views of the woods from nearly every interior space making the transition from inside to out seamless.
Sparsely decorated, the modern feel of this home is punctuated with inviting details; the antique wheelchair in the master bedroom, the Calacutta gold marble used on the counter and backsplash in the kitchen and the beautiful Matthew Hilton Light dining table.
Perhaps my favorite detail of the house is the single light fixture utilized throughout; Cecile Manz’s Caravaggio, from Light Years.
Equal attention was given to eco-ethos when building the house; architect Adam Rolston utilized a number of innovative and earth-friendly materials such as Zalmag for the exterior and Loewen windows. For more information, you can read the article in Metropolitan Home.

DIY sofa made of shipping palettes

This DIY sofa idea has caught my eye on a few sites, most notably for its versatility and ingenuity. Two wooden palettes and a few power tools later, you've got yourself a unique and inexpensive seating/sleeping option customizable to just about any space. This is upcycling at its finest!

Here is the before:

And the after:

For a less shabby chic feel, I like the look of painting the palettes to suit your decor. Depending on the size of your palettes you could fit a twin size mattress, use foam with custom fabric or cover them with floor cushions (urban, world market and le souk all have some cool options).
